Florida experiencing regional outbreaks of the flu

December 11, 2006

You'd think Florida would have fewer cases of the flu than other parts of the country this time of the year. It's not as cold, no snow, we can even open the windows! But that's actually not the case. Right now, Florida and three other southeastern states are facing regional outbreaks of the flu.

A doctor we spoke with said he normally sees more flu cases in January or February. But it just depends on when the flu comes to town, when people are traveling.

Dr. Stephen Dickey, medical director of Doctor’s Walk-In Clinic says, “When you get the flu you get hit with a high fever just sudden malaise and ache every bone in your body people tell me doctor I was so sick I just couldn't get out of bed and they come in and they say every bone in my body is aching that's the flu.”

So what can you do about the flu? Here are the doctor's orders: Get a flu shot. Wash your hands. Use hand sanitizer, wipes on your computers and phones, and sneeze into the elbow of your shirt rather than your hands. Don't take aspirin or Tylenol if you feel you have the flu. And if someone in your family has the flu, get to the doctor for a prescription of Tamiflu.
