Amantadine
Amantadine is an antiviral medication. It blocks the actions of viruses
in your body. Amantadine is used to treat and to prevent influenza
A (a viral infection). Amantadine is also used to treat Parkinson's
disease and "Parkinson-like" symptoms such as stiffness and
shaking that may be caused by the use of certain drugs. How amantadine
works in these conditions is unknown.
Amantadine is available only with your doctor's prescription, in the
following dosage forms:
- Capsules (U.S. and Canada)
- Syrup (U.S. and Canada)
- Tablets (U.S.)
The dosage of amantadine will be different for different patients. The
following information includes only the average doses of amantadine.
Your dose may be different if you have kidney disease. If your dose
is different, do not change it unless your doctor tells you to do so.
The number of capsules, tablets, or teaspoonfuls of suspension that
you take depends on the strength of the medicine.
